Clear Debris From Your Lawn

The first thing that needs your attention is all the debris that has blown into and settled on your lawn. Before you get down to cutting and mowing your yard, you have to clean the area so your lawn mower doesn’t have a tough time with parts getting clogged. Debris is also bad because it doesn’t let your yard absorb all the nutrient-rich products you’ll be applying later.

Prepare Your Mower

If you haven’t used your lawn equipment for a while, it might not be at its peak performance level. You have to perform some standard maintenance steps before you can use your lawn mower. Check for any debris in the undercarriage of the machine, and then make sure the blade is sharp enough to mow. Dull blades rip grass instead of cutting it, which can make your lawn look shoddy. If the blade looks dull, sharpen it so you can use your mower more efficiently. Replace the blade if sharpening isn’t possible.

If you’ve got a riding mower, there are a few more steps you need to get done before you begin mowing. Make sure that the fuel tank is full and change out the oil, air filter and spark plugs if you haven’t done this in a while. Whether you own a push mower or a riding mower, you'll want to give your lawn equipment a quick inspection. You’re going to be looking for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Fix what you can and leave the rest to our professionals.

Nourish Your Lawn

The colder months will have taken a toll on your yard and you need nutrient-rich products to bring it back to optimal health. Most gardens need a little fertilizer to promote growth. If your garden is susceptible to weeds and bugs, use the necessary products to prevent and kill those damaging influences.

If bare patches of land have cropped up on your yard, you’re going to need to plant new seeds and water it daily till the grass gets tall enough to be mowed. Hold off on your first mowing until it's grown the same height as the grass around it or until it reaches two inches high. After your first mowing, add fertilizers to give nourishment and promote growth.

Cut Your Lawn

After everything else is set and you’re ready to use your mower, let it sit in the sun for about an hour before you begin. This warms the machine up and makes it easier to start. As you cut your yard, aim for removing 1/3 of the grass blade. Mow every five days for the first six weeks of spring. This prevents overgrowth, which leads to grass getting cut in a way that stunts the root.
