The Founders

To understand why Mahindra is so successful, we have to go back to a time before it was founded. You’ll need to know a little bit about the founders themselves. First, there was J.C. Mahindra, India’s first Steel Controller, just as World War II was beginning and steel production and trade became a critical part of the war effort.

His brother, K.C. Mahindra, was also an industrialist, though he was chairman of the Indian Coal Fields Committee of the Government of India, as well as the Automobile and Tractor Panel. And finally, there was Malik Ghulam Muhammad, a financier who worked for the government. Together, the three started Mahindra & Muhammad, which would later become Mahindra & Mahindra, after Muhammad left for Pakistan.

Building a Company

The company first began in 1945, when all steel production would be funneled to the war effort. Initially, they assembled jeeps and continued producing steel for vehicles after the end of the war.

Then, in 1961, they joined with International Harvester to produce their first tractor. This is possibly one of their more popular products here in the United States. They’re known for their durability and reliability, as well as innovation. Eventually, they also added UTVs to their lineup.

The collaboration with International Harvester prompted Mahindra to expand into the western world, which is how they’ve become so successful today. They also offer much more than just their equipment. There are also divisions of the company for financial services, IT, and Infrastructure Development Services.
